DIY Project: Over the Couch Mantel

It’s been quite a while since I completed a DIY project but I have a great one to share with you today. My front living room was in dire need of a mantle above the couch. I had been searching for the perfect shelf for a while but I couldn’t find anything that I really liked nor could I find anything that fit the color scheme of the room. I decided to go to Michael’s to see if I could find anything and sure enough, I did. I bought a plain unfinished shelf to use as my mantle.

DIY Over the Couch Mantle

Here are the supplies I used to make this mantle
  • 1 35 inch unfinished wood shelf from Michael’s
  • ASCP chalk paint – 5 parts old white, 1 part aubusson blue
  • ASCP dark and light wax
  • Jars, sand, shells, twine, artificial flowers for decorations
  • A black photo frame that I painted white with ASCP old white, photo that I won from Singledoubt
  • sandpaper (a soft grind – only used for distressing)
Here’s what I did to create the shelf
  • 2 coats of ASCP chalk paint
  • Light sanding for some distressing effects
  • One coat of light wax followed by 1 light coat of dark wax followed by another coat of light wax.
  • Secured to the wall with drywall anchors and screws
  • Decorated with various handmade decorations and seashells
